Generative AI has changed what’s possible for eCommerce storefronts almost overnight — product descriptions written at catalog scale, alt text generated in seconds, layouts that adapt to every shopper, chat that answers instantly instead of waiting on a queue.

But what about the accessibility debt generated by operating at such scale?

To gain a better understanding of the way eCommerce brands tackle this issue, accessiBe surveyed 304 US eCommerce leaders, decision-makers, and members of the disability community with Qualtrics, and shared the findings in a live session on generative AI and eCommerce accessibility. Josh Basile, Community Relations Manager, and Sharon Uda, VP of Research and Development, walked through the data. Here’s a recap of what was discussed, along with a closer look at some of the questions that came out of a particularly insightful Q&A.

Can a session-based accessibility widget keep up with AI-generated content?

The research shows why that question is harder to answer internally than it should be. When AI-generated content creates an accessibility problem, ownership tends to land somewhere it wasn’t deliberately assigned:

  • 51% of brands say responsibility defaults to IT or engineering — not by decision, but because the content touches code
  • 15.1% default to marketing or eCommerce
  • 12.8% default to legal or compliance
  • 12.5% have a dedicated accessibility team or lead
  • 8.6% have no single owner at all

Meanwhile, 84.2% of brands describe themselves as highly confident in their ability to catch accessibility issues before content goes live — a confidence level that’s hard to square with how diffuse that ownership actually is. Marketing ships AI-generated copy. Product ships AI-assisted code. Legal inherits the risk from both. Treating this as one team’s job is how gaps open in the first place. Bottom line: No single tool covers every AI accessibility risk on its own — a widget handles runtime issues, but code-level and document-level gaps need a developer tool or human review behind it. Ownership needs to be assigned on purpose, not by whichever team happens to touch the content first.

Does a more detailed AI prompt produce a more accessible website?

accessiBe tested this directly, commissioning professional audits of two eCommerce storefronts built independently on the same AI site-generation platform — one from a simple prompt, one from a detailed brief specifying exact colors, typefaces, and reference sites. Both were audited against WCAG 2.2 AA, the current technical standard for web accessibility, using real screen readers and keyboard navigation testing.

The detailed prompt produced fewer total issues, but the identical number of critical failures — in the same features, regardless of how carefully the brief was written. A screen reader user would have no way to know a newsletter popup had appeared, let alone navigate out of it, on either site. Specifying a feature in more detail changed the stated intent, not what the platform generated at the code level. Bottom line: No. A better prompt produces a cleaner-looking site, not a more accessible one — the critical failures were identical on both storefronts regardless of how detailed the brief was.

Is accessibility just an eCommerce problem?

eCommerce carries a specific kind of exposure because of transaction volume — accessibility barriers there don’t just create inconvenience, they block purchases directly. The numbers show how concentrated that exposure has become:

But the underlying pattern isn’t specific to one sector: AI adoption is outpacing accessibility review everywhere it’s deployed at scale. 82.5% of eCommerce leaders say they’re concerned AI is creating unseen barriers for shoppers with disabilities, yet only 27% call themselves very or extremely concerned. Among brands that have actually audited their AI-generated content, 73% found issues. Bottom line: No. eCommerce carries the heaviest legal exposure because of transaction volume, but any business generating content or code with AI is accumulating the same kind of risk — just without a lawsuit yet to surface it.

What does the disability community think about AI and accessibility?

The survey data captures how businesses are approaching this shift. A separate set of responses, gathered directly from nonprofit and disability community members, captures the other side: what it’s actually like to shop online while that shift happens.

The responses were mixed, and that’s worth taking seriously rather than smoothing over. One disability community member wrote that there is more accessibility with AI, but more dependency on it could be the ruin of us. A nonprofit respondent was more measured, calling AI a tool rather than a universal answer. Another was specific about what they wanted: for AI to close gaps in backend coding, not add another separate toolset to manage. None of these land on “AI is the answer” or “AI is the problem.” They land somewhere more useful — real optimism, paired with a clear expectation that accessibility gets built in from the start rather than patched on later.

Bottom line: Cautious optimism, not rejection. The disability community isn’t asking brands to slow down on AI — it’s asking for accessibility to be part of the build from day one instead of a fix bolted on afterward.

The research behind the conversation

The questions above are a sample of a much larger study. Six reports, all part of the same program with Qualtrics, cover the full picture:
